The automatic transmission allows the operator to easily choose the desired forward or reverse travel speed by simply depressing a single foot pedal; this is similar to the way the driver of an automobile with automatic transmission changes speed when depressing the accelerator.

Whether a slow speed for trimming or faster speed for open-area mowing is desired, the operator can easily adjust by how far the foot pedal is depressed.

Brake pedalBrake pedal
Automatic transmission forward/reverse shift leverAutomatic transmission forward/reverse shift lever

With the brake pedal depressed and the forward/reverse lever in the center position, the engine can be started. Once the engine is started, it is not necessary to use the brake pedal when selecting forward or reverse. Simply move the forward/reverse lever to select travel direction, and then press the automatic foot pedal to choose from an infinite number of travel speeds.

Using RIO

CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:

  • Carefully check the area around the machine.
  • Disengage the mower before backing up.

NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.

  1. Stop forward travel.
  2. Look behind the machine to be sure there are no bystanders.
  3. Push and hold in the RIO switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly for a hydrostatic transmission or moving the transmission shift lever to the rear slot (reverse) for a continuously variable transmission (CVT)/automatic transmission.

NOTE: If the engine and mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement lever/switch to the off position. Start the engine and engage mower or other attachment. Begin again with step 2.

  1. Release the RIO switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
  2. Resume forward travel. The mower or other attachment should continue operating.
  3. Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

NOTE: For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. The loaded weight of any equipment towed by an EZtrak™ or ZTrak™ mower should not exceed 250 lb (113.4 kg). See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

  • The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
  • Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
  • Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
  • 0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
  • Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
  • Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
  • Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
  • Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
  • Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

Welded boxWelded box

Welded box construction provides maximum reliability:

  • Requires less setup time than the bolted construction.
  • Box sides and bottom are one piece and have rounded corners and no hardware for easy cleaning.
Wheels and tires

Wheels are mounted on a solid, one-piece axle for durability.

Iron/Oilite® wheel bearings with grease fittings provide lubrication for long life.

Pneumatic tires offer:

  • Good flotation
  • Minimal rolling resistance
  • Shock absorption

Turf-tread tires are used on the 13 Utility Cart.

Deluxe tailgateDeluxe tailgate

Deluxe tailgate is hinged for easy emptying and can also be quickly removed without the use of tools.

Easy hookup and tilt-dump latch
Spring-pin tractor hitchSpring-pin tractor hitch
Tilt-dump latchTilt-dump latch

A large-diameter hitch pin provides plenty of strength:

  • Fast, easy attachment to the tractor hitch
  • Spring pin to ensure the pin stays in place

The easy-to-use latch allows tilting the bed for easier unloading:

  • Steep dump angle makes emptying easier.

  • Molded stake pockets for enlarging the bed size

NOTE: Do not exceed 350 lb (158 kg) weight capacity when using swivel feature to dump.

  • 0.75- x 2-in. (19- x 51-mm) stake pockets are molded in to make addition of side extensions easy.
  • Two vertical 0.75-in. (19-mm) molded channels on each side allow for easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
  • Ribs in box bottom add strength and prevent a shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
  • Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; no tailgate to loosen or remove.
  • Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
  • 16x6.5 pneumatic tires with turf tread give good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.
  • Wheels are mounted on a solid one-piece axle.
  • Wheels turn on iron/Oilite® bushings with grease fitting for long life.
  • Spring-loaded dump latch is easy to use.

A convenient foot pedal dump release kit, LP48017, which now comes standard on all 10P and 17P carts is available to retrofit existing poly carts. This kit allows the operator to use both hands to lift the cart bed for more natural and efficient unloading.

The hopper design provides efficient bagging performance, clean operation, and easy-to-empty bags:

  • Two durable bags with a generous, 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity lift out for emptying and are easy to reinstall.
  • Efficient lower chute provides smooth flow of material to reduce chance of plugging.
  • Standard mower blades can be used for bagging, and high-lift blades are available for very difficult bagging conditions.
  • An air-exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation.
  • A convenient bungee-cord fastener makes opening and closing the hopper easy.
  • It is easy to install and remove the hopper, and no tools are required after the initial installation.
  • Pins and spring clips hold the hopper and chute in place; there is nothing left to interfere with other attachments when removed.
  • Loose-knit bags allow more air to flow through to provide complete bag filling in wet and heavy grass conditions.

46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade used on loose material46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade used on loose material

The front blade is excellent for pushing light snow or other loose material.

The blade is constructed for good performance and long life:

  • Blade surface is curved to roll rather than push material, which requires less power and increased blade capacity.
  • Bolt-on, replaceable cutting edge takes most of the wear to greatly extend the useful life of the blade.

For operator convenience, the blade comes with standard equipment for controlling it from the tractor seat:

  • Blade can be angled left, right, or used in the straight-ahead position.
Full working range
Full working rangeFull working range

The 46-in. (117-cm) blade can be operated up to 6.5 in. (16.5 cm) above ground level.

Floating action is designed into the lift linkage, so the blade is free to follow the contour of the ground.

The lift-linkage design makes raising the blade easy.

Operator blade controlOperator blade control

For operator convenience, the blade comes with angling and lift components as standard equipment so it can be controlled from the tractor seat.

Front blade lift and angling components are included as standard equipment:

  • Blade can be angled left, right, or used in the straight-ahead position.
  • For 100 Series Tractors, L100 Series Lawn Tractors, G110 Garden Tractors, and S240 Tractor, lift components are provided with the blade so it can be raised and lowered from the tractor seat.
Tractor compatibility and requirements

The 46-in. (117-cm) Front Blade is compatible with:

  • 102, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155C, and 190C Tractors

8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer8-oz (237-mL) Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer

John Deere Fuel-Protect gasoline stabilizer is a unique formula developed to ensure optimum performance and protection year-round:

  • Has corrosion preventers
  • For lawn and garden equipment and other gasoline-powered vehicles
  • Ensures quick starts in all two- and four-cycle engines
  • Use in gasoline, gasoline-oil mixture, and ethanol blends
  • Use to treat gas cans at each fill-up or use at every fill-up of vehicle
  • Keeps fuel fresh for 12 months
  • Contains a fuel injector and carburetor cleaner
  • 1 oz (29.6 mL) treats 2 gal. (7.6 L)

Always use fuel stabilizer in gasoline.

Fuel sitting in gas tanks or gas containers for more than 30 days begins to degrade. Also, blended fuels and water in gasoline can form acids that corrode fuel-system components. Protect the investment - use John Deere fuel stabilizer with corrosion preventers and prevent hard starting, surging, lack of power, poor idle, flooding, and will not run or stay running conditions caused by poor-quality fuel. Ask a local John Deere dealer or visit JDParts.

Helpful tips:

  • Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased.
  • Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline.
  • John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol.
  • Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer.
  • For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent.
  • Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can.
  • Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away.
    • Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time.

Please refer to the operator’s manual for additional recommendations and warranty information.

Fuel related issues are not considered a warrantable condition as there is no defect in the materials or workmanship of the machine.

For more information on fuel, visit John Deere Groundscare.

Tire Chains

TerraGrip Traction BeltTerraGrip Traction Belt
#

Protect your driving surface. TerraGrip Traction Belts offer enhanced traction on snow, mud, dirt, wet asphalt, and wet concrete surfaces. They will not scratch or chip concrete, asphalt, or aggregate drives or walkways. The proven reliability of the traditional steel chain attachment system is used and combined with the performance and durability of reinforced rubber slats. The rubber slats wrap around the tire so only rubber touches the driving surface. The result is aggressive traction without the risk of surface damage, that can happen with traditional chains.

Features:
  • Rubber slats surround the tire and will not damage driveways or sidewalks.
  • No steel touches the driving surface.
  • No-tools installation utilizes a traditional steel chain attachment system.
  • Traction is improved on all surfaces, especially loose material (snow, dirt, mud, sand, etc.).
  • TerraGrip Traction Belts are approved for John Deere X300, X500 M-T, and X700 Series Tractors.

Additional information for 4-wheel-steer tractor models:

  • X700 Series – requires wheel spacer sold separately
  • X500 Series – requires wheel stop adjustment
  • X300 Series – no additional requirements

Weights

34-lb (15.4-kg) front wheel weight34-lb (15.4-kg) front wheel weight

A durable cast-iron weight can be mounted to each front wheel.

These weights are recommended for use when operating on slopes, especially when the tractor is equipped with a rear grass bagger or other rear-mounted equipment.

Each weight requires BM17978 mounting hardware.

42-lb (19-kg) weights and optional mounting bracket42-lb (19-kg) weights and optional mounting bracket

The 42-lb (19-kg) Quik-Tatch can be used to counterbalance a heavy front or rear attachment and/or provide greater stability, especially when operating on hills.

This weight is constructed of cast iron and weighs approximately 42 lb (19 kg).

Some vehicles have built-in front and/or rear weight brackets to hang the weights on; others require a weight bracket that must be ordered separately.

X400/X500 Heavy-Duty Garden Tractors and X700 Series Tractors require the following parts when weights are installed on the front of the tractor:

  • One  M147986 weight retaining rod (Parts)
  • Two  M40461 spring clip (Parts)

  • Clearance is provided for the carbon canister that is required on tractors sold in California.
  • BG20627 can be used in all applications where BG20022 and BG20499 were used.

Hardware is required for installing each front-wheel weight.

Requirements:

  • Mounting may require drilling two holes in the wheel rim.
  • BM17978 mounting hardware kit is required for each weight.

NOTE: Front-wheel weights are not available for special edition tractors because the styled front-wheel design does not have appropriate holes for mounting the wheel weights and no adapter is available.

What a Disappointment. Warranty not worth the paper it is printed on.

2/5

I purchased a John Deere because I thought it was a quality product backed by a company that wants to back their product. I purchased an E100 less than 1.5 years ago with a warranty of 2 years or 120 hrs. whichever comes first. I have 27.3 hrs. on the hour meter and the mower deck blade drive belt broke (snapped). I didn't hit anything, just a defective belt. When I tried to get John Deere to honor the warranty I was run around in circles like cutting the grass. I called John Deere twice and explained the situation and they referred me back to an authorized dealer each time. I called the authorized dealer twice and was told to bring the mower in for service. I have no trailer to bring it in. No problem. They will come and pick it up for $120 not covered under the warranty and replace the belt for a nominal fee. They charge $60 for the belt and they have to determine whether the belt is defective and covered under the warranty. We are talking around a $250 charge for something that should not have happened and I shouldn't have to pay for. I asked if I could text them pictures of the broken belt (with a closeup of the break point), the hour meter, and mower ID information so they could mail me a belt. No can do...they must either have the belt or the belt with the mower to decide if it is honored under the warranty. I am not going to risk paying $250 for something that they won't cover. I called Lowe's where I purchased the machine and explained the situation to them and the best they could do is sell me a belt for $40 that I could come and pick up. I called John Deere back and explained the situation to them and further explained that I purchased their mower after I had a stroke 1.5 years ago & could no longer push a mower around since I am on disability and was no longer agile to change the belt myself. They apologized to me, but referred me back to the authorized dealer since they couldn't do anything further for me. First & last time for a Deere.

What a DISAPPOINTMENT!

2/5

When my 12 year old MTD tractor’s clutch failed, I decided I would upgrade to a John Deere, with the bonus that it was American made.Since our yard has many huge deciduous trees, I purchased a dealer-installed mulch kit. The E100 has a huge amount of power, probably more than needed. On the plus side, it climbs slopes with ease. On the minus side, it feels like I am riding a lumbering beast. The E100 has zero cushioning and rides.extremely rough. On our bumpy lot, operating it at the speed I operated the MTD causes excruciating and intolerable back pain. So I have to operate it very slowly, and cutting the lawn takes longer. The E100 has a very high center of gravity, and even on a gentle slope where the wheels on one side are lower than the other, it feels like the tractor is about to tip over, so that means I have to cut those areas with the Toro mower. It does not do a very good job of chopping up leaves, nowhere near as good as a Toro super mulcher. I was taken in by the John Deere marketing. I wish I had my MTD (which was about half the price) back!

Pros

  • a lot of power

Cons

  • extremely rough riding
  • high center of gravity
  • poor mulcher

Strong, tough

4/5

As a woman who personally is unkowledgeable in dealing with mechanical issues I needed a product I could depend on for reliability, ease of operation and satisfactory performance. I enjoy my new E100. But after the third mowing the bolt which attaches the Deflector Shield came off while in use. Now I have attached a rope to lift it when passing through a gate or by an obstacle. Very inconvenient. Only one key came with the tractor , AND THE INEVITABLE HAPPENED. It has disappeared. Does anyone know how i can get another? I would suggest at minimum two keys and a better bolt to hold deflector. I would also like to see the engagement lever easier to move up and down. Overall, the tractor is performing without any problems. Now if I can only find a key so I can use my machine!

Pros

  • heavy duty strong dependable easy to turn

Cons

  • some problems with attached deflector shield

Worthless purchase

I do not care if you post my review or not. I am more interested in you knowing my issue. I have tried contacting a dealer at first but I had not luck. If I hear back from you I may change my opinion of John DeereI know my first mistake was buying it from Lowes. only 1.5 hours of run time the belt broke. After investigation they deck was put together wrong. I called Lowes and only had the mower 3 weeks told them the problem they wanted $250 to pick it up even though it was their fault,. I fixed it myself but since I have the mulch blades on and cover. I clean my mower after each run and still do not have 8 hours of run time but my yard is a mess after mowing. Mulching is terrible. I had better luck from a cheap riding mower from home depot pair $700 for it 12 years ago. This new john deere is no better. I contacted a dealer and they had no time to discuss and promised to return the call but of course no return call. This happened several times. not what I expected from buying a John Deere. I am sorry I paid the extra money. hopefully I can unload this next spring to some other sucker

2 mo of use belt broke

3/5

After only 2 months of use mowing 1 acre every other weekend (that’s only 5 uses), the driving belt came off. It’s a shame to pay $1600 for a product you expect to get at least a few years and only get 2 months out of it. Pretty disappointed with this.

First and last deere

1/5

Owned a huskee I bought in 99 and got almost 20 good years out of it. Bought this when it finally quit running and have regretted it ever since. Mows like a blind barber. I expected much more from a John Deere but should have known better. Right now I am trying to sell it to buy a lawn mower that actually mows an even line. All I can say is stay away and if you do I hope you can get more help than I did.

My wife made me get this last Father’s Day because as I grew older she grew tired of seeing me mow the lawn with a push mower hour after hour and then complain about my aching back for the rest of the weekend. I never would’ve bought this for myself since the lawns only total 1/3 of an acre (residential, lots of trees, corners, sheds, and sidewalks). But now, after a year of use, this machine has made such a difference in my life. What used to take 2-3 hours now takes 30-40 minutes with MUCH less effort - essentially no effort. I would go so far as to say it’s fun! After 20 years cutting this grass I’m shocked to find myself enjoying it. Now I can get my exercise doing something I enjoy rather than yard work. I know this mower is expensive, but it has given me no trouble whatsoever. I may feel differently if it ever needs major work but for now I’m very glad to have this e100. My only disappointment is that I never received my promised free John Deere hat - oh well, I least I got the tractor. I eventually bought the JD 2 bag bagger attachment in the autumn for the leaves. It was also expensive but works great and has been worth it.

Okay for an entry level machine..

3/5

I was a landscape contractor for 34 years and during that time my company owned and used many commercial grade and powerful mowers. After I sold my business, I unexpectedly found myself in need of a riding mower for my new home. I chose the E100 which took a lot of getting used to but overall it is okay for a small yard sized 1 acre or less with grass under 5.5" tall. If the grass is taller than 5.5" the engine bogs down.

Pros

  • relatively inexpensive
  • low maintenance
  • nice design

Cons

  • engine could be larger
  • prefer zero turn mowers
  • prefer hydro drive

Great Mower

5/5

Bought my John Deere E100 in this summer 2018. I have been very impressed with this mower. It starts right up is very quite while mowing. Its comfortable to sit in and the controls are easy to use. This mower is also a sharp looking mower with great styling. Love John Deere, only mower I will buy.

Very poorly designed.

1/5

I have had my D105 about 3 years and the very cheaply made drive system has had the spring on top of the cut pulley changed out twice. Now it needs it a third time, but the threads are now stripped out. Very cheap and poor design. When I bought this my first John Deere, I thought I had the best mower money could by, now I find myself looking for something else. A plastic transmission case, you got to be kidding me. Before I attempted to repair it myself, I took it to two expert repair shops and they turned me away, saying it is a poor design and they would not repair it.

Not your fathers John Deere

3/5

I recently purchased the E100 from my local Lowe's, got the free delivery and 6 months interest free to complete the payment. I got my new machine, filled the gas tank, connected up the battery and turned the key. The engine cranked for a few seconds and I let off the key, immediately there was a loud buzzing sound from under the hood. I turned the key again but nothing only the buzzing sound. So I disconnected the negative lead on the battery and the noise stopped but the second I touched the lead to the battery again the engine cranked! My guess is the starter solenoid got stuck in the on position. So Lowe's said they had another E100 and that we could do a swap. The next day they arrived but the "new" machine didn't have any paperwork or key but had a full tank of gas and the battery was hooked up. So obviously this machine had been a return. There was no time on the hour meter so it was "new". Well I accepted it (I kept the key and paperwork from the first one) but this one wouldn't even crank when I turned the key. I called the place the does the set up for Lowe's and thankfully spoke to the right person, he said sometimes the safety switch for the power takeoff (blade engagement) comes off it's mount and sure enough that was it. I snapped that plunger switch back into the slot and it then started right up. I've mowed my half acre lot twice now and everything works fine. This is my first John Deere and initially it was a rough start but hopefully that's behind me (Lowe's is also to blame for sending out that second faulty machine). It's a nice mower once you get it running.

Pros

  • cuts nice
  • quieter than my old mtd mower

Cons

  • disappointed that two new machines had problems

I owned the e100 for 12 years

5/5

I owned it from 2006-2018. I took care of it myself, changed the oil every year, no tools needed. I sold it this year for almost half of what I bought it for back in 2006! That guy is now using it as his method of making a living. So, I don't think it gets any better than this!

Pros

  • easy to operate
  • easy to maintain
  • lasts forever

Perfect little machine

5/5

We purchased his little tractor when we bought our new house to maintain an acre of lawn/garden. It works like a charm, easy to operate and loads of fun! Since this is my first riding mower (at age 60) I have nothing to compare it to, but when I asked around, John Deere is the go-to out here.

  • easy to operate

I am very disappointed in my recent purchase.

2/5

I always used to value JD implements, but this e100 is very disappointing. We have an acre of hilly property to mow and the fact that the deck has only ONE un-adjustable 'ball' stabilizer up on the FRONT of the left side deck lets it make gouges every time I turn; even when I do it slowly. The "dead man" seat controller is far too sensitive in that it doesn't even allow me to sit to one side or the other to allow for leaning ( it DOES appear to be top heavy) on minor slopes without killing the engine. I don't like the little PEG accelerator as it give me foot cramps every time I mow with it. I very much dislike have to press a button to go in reverse !!

Pros

  • mows well on flat ground

Cons

  • sensitive dead man seat
  • pushing a button for reverse

Easy operation. Good power

4/5

Bought this E100 John Deere from Lowe’s in Augusta ga. and I love it, great price and value over other models they sell. It’s cuts very well and has a good edge cut great turning radius and very easy to operate and the self cleaning deck works decent but I clean it afterwards every time. Overall great Lil tractor. Only drawback is the mount on the PTO safety switch is awful moves during operation and if you don’t check it to make sure it is aligned properly it won’t let it crank, happened to me first time I used mine. Took me 30 min to find out why it wouldn’t crank!!! But still great Lil tractor...

Pros

  • ease of operation

Cons

  • cheap safety switch on pto
  • mount on switch

Does not mow bermuda or fescue

1/5

It does not matter which of the three blades you use, the mower apparently is just worthless. Using a bagging blade leaves with the bagger just leaves the grass on the ground in dry clumps that have to be raked and bagged manually. Three passes minimum. Using the original blade, takes more passes than I am willing to try, not sure it is for. I do not know what the mulching blade would do differently, it appears exactly the same as the bagging blade. I am trying to dispose of this thing, just 1500 bucks thrown in the waste basket.

Pros

Cons

  • does not mow
  • no customer service.

Stay away from this model.

1/5

My first John Deere was a model 110 that I bought new in 1975. It was an outstanding performer and I passed it down to my son when we sold our home on a one acre lot. I bought an E100 machine for our smaller lot, to replace my 10 year old Yard Machine (Cost half as much as the Deere) and did a great job. The E100 looked like a good deal except you can't change direction without a lot of playing with the shifter. I now have 4.7 hours on the meter and have only cut the grass twice. Normal time on the old Yard Machine was 45 minutes. I bought the E100 on line from Home Depot for the free delivery and "White Glove Treatment". The transmission hasn't worked easily since day one. I contacted the local dealer and was told they don't sell that model and could not demonstrate shifting from forward to reverse. He suggested going to Home Depot for service. I bought the machine on line so who will fix my problem. Sorry, it' a pretty machine and that's all I can say.

Pros

  • nice color
  • comfortable seat
  • wife liked the appearance

Cons

  • can't shift fom forward to reverse
  • can only cut grass in one direction
